Five reasons why you need home contents insurance

There are two types of insurance generally used by the public. Building Insurance which covers permanent fixtures and fittings, such as kitchens and bathrooms. And Contents Insurance, for things you furnish your home with, TV and personal belongings etc. Think of building as just the outside of your home and contents, just the inside.

Often you can get insurance of both types from the same company or if you prefer to purchase them separately better deals may be had.

1 – It may be cheaper than you think.

According to the ABI (Association of British Insurers) in 2017 the average price of contents insurance was £139 per year. Which equates to £11.50 a month. This was with an estimate of contents worth £35,000.

On top of that, several insurance companies have ongoing deals, cash back incentives, vouchers for purchasing and other perks. The market is wide and varied so finding the right, cheapest and most reliable company has never been easier.

2 – It can cover you outside of the home.

One thing a lot of people don’t know is that with personal possessions cover, you are covered if you damage or lose items outside your home. Laptops, jewelry, and even things like camera’s, watches and mobile phones are often covered as apart of your policy.

Some policies can also cover you abroad, albeit at an additional cost. If you damage or lose something whilst away you may well be able to claim them through your insurance.

3 – It could help you with fixing broken items.

Many, if not most, policy providers offer additional extras such as emergency cover to pay for things like callouts or parts a plumber may need to fix something in your home that has broken. These extras can be a tremendous help during the winter months when a boiler unexpectedly stops working.

4 – Lots of things are covered.

There are many personal items covered by contents insurance.

Things lost or damaged by:

  • Theft or vandalism.
  • Flooding and environmental damage.

Single items often covered

  • Beds, wardrobes, sofas, drawers, tables and chairs.
  • TV’s, computers, laptops, tablets, sound systems and media players.
  • Microwaves, toasters, plates, pots and pans.

You can also talk to your policy supplier to get insurance on specific items which hold a greater value that wouldn’t normally be covered.

5 – Peace of mind

It would be difficult to put a price on peace of mind. Many think contents insurance is an unnecessary expense and since it is not a legal requirement usually don’t consider it until after something bad has happened. Whether you’re going away on holiday, out of town for work or even unsure about your local area, insurance can help you with peace of mind. Many see it as a safety net which can protect them against having to start again.

There are hundreds of companies that offer contents insurance, even some with whom you are already doing business. Shop around and you’ll find that it isn’t as expensive as you think.
